Overindulged this festive break? It’s time to ease yourself back into exercise.
But if you can’t bear the thought of the gym just yet, leave that for 2019’s fitness resolution and instead take some gentle steps to help your body get back into shape before the year is out.
Walking really is one of the best forms of exercise and nearly everyone can take part, no matter their fitness levels. Also, it’s a great group activity perfect for this time of year when family and friends are around.
To get the most out of a walking workout you should aim to get your heart pumping and increase your breathing rate, but not be totally out of breath. Think slight panting rather than a full-blown sweat. And if you are walking with friends and family, make sure you aim for more than a leisurely stroll for real calorie-burning benefits.
Jogging on the spot
Not quite ready for the outside world? Simply take your exercise inside and jog on the spot. A five-minute jog while you wait for the kettle to boil can see you get rid of 45 calories. Or do it in front of the TV while catching up on Christmas shows. Combining exercise with something you enjoy means the workout won’t seem like a burden, then repeat throughout the day.
OK, so if even a five-minute jogging session seems like too much of stretch, you can always fall back on some housework – nope we’re not joking. If you’ve had a house full of people this party season then you’ll no doubt need to get dusting and vacuuming, but instead of ambling around absentmindedly, put some real effort into these chores. Surveys have worked out that women spend an average of 16 hours a week cleaning, so putting your back into it can mean a clean house and a toned physique. Vacuuming can burn up to 194 calories an hour, while gardening can see you lose as many as 288. Mopping, dusting and cleaning windows will also have you feeling the burn.
