If Pantone’s pick for Colour of the Year is anything to go by, coral is about to make a major comeback.

Officials at the global colour authority have named Living Coral, an orange shade with a golden undertone, as the official hue of 2019.

“Colour is an equalising lens through which we experience our natural and digital realities and this is particularly true for Living Coral,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Colour Institute, in a statement.

“With consumers craving human interaction and social connection, the humanising and heartening qualities displayed by the convivial Pantone Living Coral hit a responsive chord.”

And if you’re keen to give the “vibrant yet mellow” colour a whirl, there’s no need to wait as there are plenty of great coral-coloured cosmetics already on the market.

Nail polish

Desperate to get your hands on the official Living Coral colour?

Well, you should know executives at Pantone have partnered with Butter London to create a nail polish in the exact shade.

For best results, apply two coats of the creamy opaque varnish with a top coat.

In addition to the Living Coral, the company has designed a line of complementary polishes, including Coral Glazen, a glittery version of the hero shade, and Living Coral Crushed Diamonds, which features an opalescent finish.

Dior‘s Vernis in Coral Crush is a tried-and-tested favourite too, as is Essie‘s Nail Polish in Tart Deco.

Unlike previous Pantone Colour of the Year picks such as Ultra Violet, a bright purple, and Greenery, a fresh green, Living Coral is a very easy shade to wear on the lips.

Butter London has created the Living Coral Plush Rush Lip Gloss, which can be worn alone or layered with your favourite lipstick.

Elsewhere, check out NARSSheer Lipstick in Barbarella, gorgeous peachy hue, and Pat McGrath LabsLip Fetish Lip Balm in Passion Flower, which can be described as a very sheer pink-peach.

Coral doesn’t just need to be relegated to the nails or lips; celebrities such as Emily Ratajkowski and Selena Gomez have both recently proved that peach eye make-up can be a real winner.

Head to your nearest cosmetics counter and seek out Almay‘s Shadow Squad Eyeshadow in Unapologetic, which contains four matte and metallic shadows in a coral colour palette, as well as Huda Beauty’s Obsessions Palette Coral, which combines warm shades of burnt orange and dusty pinks.
